What is this handbasket we’re in, and where is it going?

Rollin’ with my cheeses

Remember learning about lemmings at some point in your public schooling experience? How they commit mass suicide by running off cliffs? Well, this is kind of like that. Just when I thought that the Irish had surpassed the British in brazen, yet admirable, tomfoolery, I stumble upon this youtube video –

And people say that rugby is hardcore. Not only does this sport, aptly called cheese rolling, appear to be insanely dangerous, but it is also appears to be incredibly fun, particularly if you’re an observer.

No one is real sure just when cheese rolling came about, but it appears to be steadily growing in popularity. And why not? I don’t know about you, but people rolling down a large hill, dueling each other on the slopes in a mostly vain attempt to catch, and win, a wheel of cheese is my cup of tea. I would watch this on TV. Over and over. And one more time for good measure.

I feel compelled, after having learned of this amazing sport, to take a trip over the pond some May, far in the future, if only to watch this spectacle take place. Though, I wouldn’t put it past myself to, you know, participate. It’d be a good story to tell. Chicks dig giant cheese wheels hurtling down hills at speeds of up to 70 km/hr – or was it scars? You’re sure to get both here, anyway.
