What is this handbasket we’re in, and where is it going?

Feeling Blue? Have some vitamin-Red.

Since time immemorial, man has entered into competition against his fellow man. Often times, these men would form “teams” to create a sense of identity. Soon after, teams would become affiliated with different colors. And that’s how we ended up with the never-ending struggle between Red and Blue. New studies have shown that, in online video games, Red – standing for fire, passion, courage, mourning, stopping and Santa Claus – more often than not gains the upper hand over its bitter rival, Blue.

Just don’t tell Church, Tucker and Caboose.

Of course, one of the main rules of statistical analysis is that correlation doesn’t necessarily equate to causation – but it’s an interesting set of data nonetheless. Even more interesting, perhaps to some, is that studies have shown a similar correlation within the realm of team sports, as well as within single, mano-a-mano confrontations. No wonder the Cubs can’t win the World Series, or the French wars (I kid, I kid).

This has interesting ramifications for the field of color psychology, which has been constantly embattled by more traditional psychologists. As if psychology of any kind has any real reason to refer to itself as a science – feh. At least with colors, empirical data can be gathered to build some semblance of a case. It’s interesting, at any rate.

Personally, I’m inclined to believe that all psychologists are a group of charlatans and quacks, but that’s just me. That all just stems from my love/hate relationship with the Bobo Doll Experiment of the early ’60s. I love the experiment, seeing if kids will wail on an inflatable clown, but hate the analysis. Come on! What kid isn’t going to beat the crap out of a Bobo doll – it’s an inflatable clown. And clowns are the penultimate nemesis of man (death, I suppose, being the traditional ultimate nemesis – but maybe lawyers)! Whatever, I’ll just continue playing my video games, thank you…But this time I’ll be joining team Red. Onward to victory!
