What is this handbasket we’re in, and where is it going?

By the numbers

This year, there are ten thousand athletes participating in the Olympic games held in Beijing. There are 30,000 foreign journalists. There are a couple hundred thousand tourists on hand. The Chinese have 100,000 security forces stationed in Beijing.

And if you’re counting, that’s more than twice the police force than is employed in New York City (which, at 37,800 officers, is the largest in the country).

Experts say that China is as prepared as is “humanly possible” to ensure the security of the Olympics, as well as preventing “unauthorized protests.” A cop on every corner, indeed.
